Human Language Dynamics (Bowern Lab)

This dataverse contains research materials, publications, corpora, datasets and other compilations related to research in Claire Bowern's Human Language Dynamics research group. We work broadly on language change and language documentation, especially (though not exclusively) with indigenous Australian communities.

Bowern, Claire; Adams, Toby; Jewell, Jeremiah; Cram, Coralie; Kim, Juhyae; Yi, Irene, 2023, "Kullilli Sketch Grammar", https://doi.org/10.60600/YU/W4NKNG, Yale Dataverse, V1
This is the first release version of the Kullilli Ngulkana sketch grammar of the Kullilli language. It was written on the basis of materials recorded by Kullilli elders and linguists, with the aim of condensing what we know about the Kullilli language into a form that can be used for teaching and learning.

Bowern, Claire, 2023, "Replication Data for: Bowern, Claire (2012) The Riddle of Tasmanian Languages.", https://doi.org/10.60600/YU/TLDLSC, Yale Dataverse, V1
Recent work which combines methods from linguistics and evolutionary biology has been fruitful in discovering the history of major language families because of similarities in evolutionary processes. Such work opens up new possibilities for language research on previously unsolvable problems, especially in areas where information from other sources...

Bowern, Claire; Phillips, Josh, 2023, "Replication Data for: Phillips, Josh and Bowern, Claire: Bayesian methods for ancestral state reconstruction in morphosyntax: Exploring the history of argument marking strategies in a large language family (Journal of Language Evolution, 2022)", https://doi.org/10.60600/YU/6JNPNF, Yale Dataverse, V1
Bayesian phylogenetic methods have been gaining traction and currency in historical linguistics, as their potential for uncovering elements of language change is increasingly understood. Here, we demonstrate a proof of concept for using ancestral state reconstruction methods to reconstruct changes in morphology. We use a simple Brownian motion mode...

Bowern, Claire, 2023, "Australian Language Mapping Files", https://doi.org/10.60600/YU/6DKUB3, Yale Dataverse, V1
Shapefiles (QGIS package and related exports) for Australian language locations. These files closely resemble the maps in Bowern, Claire (2023) Oxford Guide to Australian Languages (they are the inputs from which the volume maps were created). Also included are files that link the language names to Glottocodes, ISO codes, and AIATSIS codes.

Sterneck, Rachel; Polish, Annie; Bowern, Claire, 2023, "Topic modeling in the Voynich manuscript", https://doi.org/10.60600/YU/PXULND, Yale Dataverse, V1
This article presents the results of investigations using topic modeling of the Voynich Manuscript (Beinecke Library MS408). Topic modeling is a set of computational methods which are used to identify clusters of subjects within text. We use latent dirichlet allocation, latent semantic analysis, and nonnegative matrix factorization to cluster Voyni...
